Active deterrence is a hot topic in the surveillance industry right now. We’ve had several new products hit our warehouse in recent months with active deterrence as one of the main features. These cameras seem to fly off the shelves faster than we can even keep them in stock! Our customers have been loving active deterrence cameras, and we can see why. There is a lot of benefits to adding active deterrence to your video surveillance system.
In this post, I want to introduce you to our newest active deterrence camera from Uniview: the IPC2128SB-ADF28KMC-I0. This is a powerful little camera with active deterrence features, 4K UltraHD video, three night illumination modes, Deep Learning artificial intelligence, and more.
Most active deterrence cameras tend to be large and bulky. This makes sense, because these cameras really like to stand out. However, not every situation requires a large camera to do the job. In fact, there are many residential or small business applications which may favor an active deterrence camera with a smaller form factor that still stands out just as much as some of the bigger guys. And this camera is is perfect for that!
We’re going to walk you through some of the main features of this camera, but first let’s talk about what active deterrence is and why you might need it.
What Is Active Deterrence?
Many people invest in a video surveillance system or a single camera hoping to scare would-be criminals off of their property. But as we explain in this blog post, security cameras don’t really attract or deter burglars. For the most part, your security cameras will go ignored. This is fine, because security cameras aren’t really designed to deter criminal activity; they are designed to capture it on video.
If you want your security camera to do more than passively record activity, then you may be interested in a camera designed specifically for active deterrence. These cameras typically feature some sort of motion-triggered audible and visible warning to scare off potential intruders.
There are many situations where you may want to add active deterrence to your surveillance system. Maybe you’re installing a camera in a location where there is a high crime rate. Maybe there has been a lot of vandalism in your area.
Maybe it’s not crime that you’re concerned about. Active deterrence cameras are also perfect for gentle reminders. Maybe your camera is installed in a no parking zone, and you just need to let people know that they shouldn’t be parking there. Or maybe you just want to be a good neighbor and kindly let passersby know that they’re walking in a surveilled area.
Whatever the case may be, when you’re looking for an active deterrence solution, Nelly’s Security has you covered. We have several different active deterrence cameras for you to choose from. But since you’re reading this blog post, let’s find out if the IPC2128SB-ADF28KMC-I0 active deterrence bullet is the camera for you. It does have several unique features that allow it to stand out from the rest of our active deterrence cameras. Let’s take a look!
Active Deterrence Bullet Overview
Like most active deterrence cameras, the IPC2128SB-ADF28KMC-I0 warns intruders with its flashing white light strobe lights and with its onboard speakers. You can choose from 10 different deterrence sounds, or upload your own sound file. Here are a few of its key features.
- 4K UltraHD Video: Uniview’s active deterrence bullet boasts crisp and clear 8MP 4K UltraHD video at 20 frames per second.
- Small Form Factor: The IPC2128SB-ADF28KMC-I0 is smaller than most active deterrence cameras. This means it can blend in nicely and go unnoticed until it needs to draw attention to itself.
- NDAA-Compliant: As a part of Uniview’s Prime I line of products, the IPC2128SB-ADF28KMC-I0 is fully NDAA-compliant. This means it can be installed on US federal government properties.
- Edge Storage via MicroSD Card: This camera can hold up to 256GB of on-board storage.
- Flexible lighting modes: This camera has three lighting modes, including a full 24/7 color mode,z which we’ll take a look at in the next section.
- Deep Learning Artificial Intelligence: AI is necessary for active deterrence cameras, because you don’t want your camera’s alarm going off 24/7. With Uniview’s Deep Learning algorithm, this camera can recognize human/vehicle movement and ignore all the rest.
- 2-Way Audio: This camera has a built-in microphone for real-time audio surveillance. The deterrence speakers can also be used for communication, making this camera great for 2-way audio.
This camera has a lot of features to explore, but we’re going to keep this blog post focused on the active deterrence features. In the next two sections, we’ll take a look at the strobe light and the audio settings.
Active Deterrence Bullet Smart Light Modes
The onboard strobe light is great for active deterrence applications. You can instantly get anyone’s attention by flashing these bright, white lights. But these strobe lights are also beneficial for other scenarios besides active deterrence. Let’s take a look.
Using the Strobe Lights for Active Deterrence
First and foremost, the onboard strobe lights can be set up as a trigger for any of the four intelligent events: line crossing, intrusion, region entrance, and region exit. If you have this selected as a trigger, the lights will flash anytime the event catches human or vehicle movement, depending on how you have the deep learning filters set up. When you select the lights as a trigger action, you can also choose the duration, anywhere from 1 to 60 seconds.
Interaction Between the Strobe Light & Infrared
This bullet camera does not have starlight illumination, so it relies on infrared LEDs to see in the dark. Since that’s the case, you may be wondering how the flashing white light affects the performance of the IR. For this, there are three illumination modes that help you have the most flexible control over your camera.
First, there is standard infrared mode. In this mode, the white light doesn’t affect the infrared at all. When the lights start to flash, the camera will maintain its monochromatic image. You’ll be able to see a change in the contrast and brightness as the light flashes (see the video below), but for the most part your video will remain consistent throughout the night.
Next, there is white light mode. With this mode selected, the white lights will always remain on. Unlike infrared, the white light is visible to the human eye, making this mode much more obvious. This is great if you want to draw attention to your security camera before someone trips an event. It’s also great if you want full color footage 24/7. In this mode, the light will not change during an event. The audio is the only trigger that will alert intruders.
Finally, this camera also has dual light mode, which combines the IR lights and the white light. Most of the time, the camera will act as a standard IR camera with a monochromatic image. But when someone triggers an event and the white lights flip on, the camera will switch between IR mode and full color mode. In dual light mode, the floodlight will not flash. It will remain a solid light for the duration of the trigger.
Infrared mode will allow you to see further distances, while the white light mode gives you that full color image for crisper and clearer details. Dual light mode is the best of both worlds, allowing you to maintain a wider surveillance field during most of the night, then switching to full color mode right when you need to make out more details.
Light is an important aspect of active deterrence, but it’s not the only aspect. Let’s take a look at this camera’s audio capabilities.

Active Deterrence Bullet Audio
The onboard speakers also have a dual purpose. They are designed primarily for active deterrence, but they can also be used to activate two-way audio, allowing you to communicate with people through your security camera.
But when it comes to deterrence, you have several options to dial in your camera just the way you want. First, you can choose between 10 different sounds for your active deterrence needs. Those sounds are:
- You are in the alert area! Please leave!
- You are in the danger zone! Do not approach!
- Please be aware! You are in the monitored area!
- No parking! Please leave!
- Important place! Please leave!
- Private area! Do not enter!
- Danger! Deep Water!
- Danger! Do not climb!
- Welcome!
- Warning!
If none of those sounds tickle your fancy, you can also upload your own sounds. Add a siren, a beep, a voice, a song, or anything you like so long as the file size does not exceed 100Kb.
